Ambazonia declared independence from Cameroun on October 1, 2017. A Non International Armed Conflict (NIAC) was initiated by OEAS in July 2020. Camerounian forces have caused up to 30,000 civilian casualties and have displaced 500,000 Ambazonians.

Azawad

Mouvement National de Libération de l’Azawad (MNLA)

Population: 1,300,000 est.
Territory: 860,000 square kilometers

Predecessor State: Independent State of Azawad 2012-2013

The MNLA unilaterally declared the Independent State of Azawad in 2012 and maintained de facto independence until the country was invaded by French and Chadian troops in 2013. The MNLA continues the internal struggle for national self-determination.

Biafra was an independent sovereign state recognized by 5 UN member states 1967-1970. The exile government was reestablished in 1999 and there has been continual nonviolent domestic agitation for independence since the 1980s. The Nigeria state security services (DSS) have harassed, arrested, jailed and murdered Biafra self determination advocates.

Republic of Cabinda 1974 –

Cabinda declared independence from Portugal in 1974 and was invaded by Angola in 1975. The country has been under military occupation continually since 1975 with ongoing armed resistance by the forces of FLEC. MIC supports a peaceful internationally supervised referendum. Angola considers Cabinda a province with special status.

Canary Islands

VECINOS UNIDOS CANARIOS (“United Canarian Neighbours”) has asked the UN to include the archipelago in the list of territories to be decolonized. It has also made similar demands to the Spanish Senate and House. All of this while Spain has camouflaged the Canary Islands as an outermost region.

Kabylie

The Provisional Republic of Kabylie seeks regional autonomy and self determination for the Kabylie people. The current movement dates from 2001 and faces severe repression from the Algerian government.

Khoi-San

The Khoi San are the original inhabitants of South Africa and seek icreased recognition, restitution, and autonomy within South Africa.

Mombasa Republican Council

Mombasa Protectorate (1895-1963)

Mombasa was a British Protectorate incorporated into the new republic of Kenya without democratic input. The Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) is a peaceful civil organization seeking a referendum and democratic process on the future of Mombasa and the coastal strip. The MRC has been unjustly vilified and persecuted by the Kenyan government.

Territory: 50,400 square miles

Matabeleland Protectorate (1888-1894)

Matabeleland was forcibly incorporated by the British colonialists with Mashonaland to form Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. The Shona dominated government of Zimbabwe has exploited the mineral wealth of Matabeland and persecuted and murdered its people, the Mthwakazi. The Mthwakazi seek redress and self-determination.

Rif Independence Movement

Population: 3.5 million
Territory: NA

Predecessor State:
Republic of the Rif (1921-1927)

Under the charismatic anti-colonialist, Abd Al-Karim, the Rif successfully battled the Spanish for independence until subdued by illegal chemical weapons. The Riffians seek peaceful self-determination but are persecuted by the Moroccan monarchy.

Vhavenda

Dabalorivhuwa Patriotic Front (DPF)
Population: 2.5 million est.
Territory: 2860 square miles

Predecessor State:
Republic of Venda 1973-1994

Vhavenda is the successor to the tribal homeland of Venda. The Dabalorivhuwa Patriotic Front (DPF) seeks to address financial and political issues of self-determination through the South African constitutional process.
